The summer has ended, and for the next three minutes, I'm inspired.

It's probably time for me to admit that no matter how long I hold out, I always come back to Xanga in the end. Smile... I don't actually think that's true, but I'm leaving it in anyway.

Today, I finish up my last day of summer teaching. Three classes from now, my wonderful, sometimes difficult summer job will end. I will be relieved when it is over, but I am honestly looking forward to the day of teaching. Working with children of all ages as well as their parents has been incredibly rewarding for me; I've needed this experience.

Tomorrow, I'll spend the day running errands that have been put off, mailing back books to my boss since I no longer need them, doing laundry, and packing up my room to move down to Lexington. On Tuesday, I'll head down there and get things done there as well. Wednesday, the whole Fam (including significant others) is heading on family vacation - this will be super fun. After that, a short visit with my man's parents, and then back to the world of moving and job-searching. I have applied at a church and some other random places throughout Lexington, and I'll continue looking to see where I will best fit in. In the meantime, the GRE has begun to stare me in the face, and I am realizing that this is the most convenient time for me to study for it. So, that's on the list as well.

I would write more - honest - but it's time to go to church. Maybe I'll be back in a couple of months... take care, all of my wonderful Xanga friends!

This entry really does not deserve a title...

Guess what is easier than writing my Medieval Literature term paper? That would be writing this entry. After a shameful silence of over two months, I return to the world of Xanga for purposes of procrastination once again. It's good to be back, friends.

In terms of updating you all, I have a wonderful summer job lined up, teaching reading enrichment classes to ages four or five thru high school. I will be able to live at home (so happy) for the summer and work at Bellarmine University in Louisville. My wonderful roommate, Kay (otherwise known as Kristen Locke) will be at home with me until her wedding in late July, so we'll have some good planning time together. My little brother will be at home with me as well, getting ready for his freshman year here at Asbury. The only real stressor here, besides the change and separation from others who are important to me, is the training period for the job, which takes place in Atlanta, beginning finals week. So, finals week for this chica is a week early... five, maybe six finals during the last week of classes may be a big feat, but it is no match for me ingenuity, I assure you. I am so looking forward to the lovely little window in between the last final and the day I fly down to Atlanta, when the feeling of being a graduate can just seep into my skin as I pack furiously. I will fly to Atlanta on Sunday, attend training for a full week, fly back into town on Friday, attend commencement and Mother's Day exercises as well as move into Megan's and my beautiful townhouse all weekend, then fly back to Atlanta for two more weeks of training. I will have four days around Memorial Day to get ready for work, then begin on May 30. I get a little breathless just thinking about it.

I love my life; it's just that sometimes, there is a little too much of it.

At the moment, the thing I am not doing is writing an 8-10 page rough draft of a paper on the function of Harry Bailly, the Host, as storyteller in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. I think Dr. Strait has a much better idea of what I am writing about than I do, and that is a concern. I'm so very glad this is simply a rough draft. It's good that these posts are not meant to inspire jealousy on the part of anyone else, because if that were the case, I would be an utter failure, and I hate failure.

All right, enough is enough. My best wishes to all my Xanga friends (and sneaky readers) that exist out there - you are perhaps few, but certainly worthy of better than you will find here. :) Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gifts to me...

List of things that I love:
  • Bullet points
  • A plan
  • Having everything unpacked and in its place (not there yet)
  • Weekend trips to New Albany
  • Sunday lunch (duck, pheasant, potatoes, creamed peas and corn, crescent rolls, sauteed mushrooms, salad... my mom is a wonder)
  • Lounging on the couch, resting my head on Dad's lap
  • The scent of flowers
  • Praying while driving
  • Having to read The Chronicles of Narnia for a grade
  • Megz, Ash, Laura, Leigh, Michelle... and so on
  • Relief
  • Fine-tuned vocabulary (laughing, because I couldn't find a better descriptor than "fine-tuned")
  • Listening to Dr. Strait lecture
  • Posting on this ludicrous excuse for a personal website instead of getting things done in preparation for tomorrow.
School is quite good - Leigh and Michelle are in the other room throwing around words such as "homozygous" and "genotype". I'm glad to leave their genetics class vernacular to them and concentrate on Beowulf and Prince Caspian for my night's study. Or maybe just Prince Caspian.

And do you want to know the reason why school is good right now? Because I just returned from a weekend at my real home, and the rest I received there made all te difference. Our immediate family and church family amaze me by the way they work. I am singularly blessed.

Everyone who has a chance should lift up the next student chapel, which will take place Monday, February 6th. The Lord has brought a multitude of interesting points together for ths chapel, and I really can't wait to see how it all comes together. There remains quite a bit of work to be accomplished, but all that aside, I'm full of anticipation. The focus is on the truth of renewal, and Brett Johnson will be giving his story of personal change and renewal. You won't want to miss. :)

Better get some work done before Megz gets back from church, because let's be honest, there won't be nearly as much motivation to work after that. A good night to all...

All right Ben, Jon, Anthony - this one's for you. You know, I initiated this Xanga site ordeal in order that I might receive my brother's posts by e-mail and leave comments. I've always had an aversion to having a website devoted exclusively to my own self-talk. Even if I talk about things other than myself, it's just mine. This paragraph is a great example. But, as it turns out, one cannot have a Xanga site solely for defensive purposes, so to speak; if one has a site, he or she is required to go on the offensive and actually use it. While the reminders to update the site are incredibly flattering and appreciated, still, I should really be ironing Dad's shirts or packing for tomorrow or something. But, here I am, pleasing the masses... :)

Working at PC Building Materials over the break has been great at times, and at times no fun at all. The first week back of seeing all my old co-workers and reminding myself how to ring someone up for twelve 2x4 8's treated and some drywall mud (5JC) was lots of fun. I think I have made more mistakes this week, though.

For instance - today was a very long day. At least half of the salespeople are on vacation, making life a little hectic at the sales counter. Added to that, our receptioninst didn't come in today, and I was put in charge of the phone... except that I was needed at the counter too. This is turning into a ridiculously long story. At one point, when I had two customers in front of me and one of the phone, this man comes up to my terminal with a broomstick in his hand like the ones we sell in aisle 3 and says, "Look, I went to use it, and it just broke right off. Can I just go get another one?" I recognized him from earlier in the day, although I hadn't actually been the one to cash him out. I quickly decided I could take his broken broomstick, have a manager return it as defective, and fix the inventory that way, so I nodded and went on to other customers. I knew I should have asked for a receipt... but I didn't. I went looking for him when I had a chance, but he was long gone, and lo and behold, I was left with a broom which he had never purchased from us. I went to find his receipt in the computer after awhile, and the last time we sold a broom like that was in October. So frustrating... Hope he's happy with his $4.45, shiny, black broomstick. I'll fix the inventory tomorrow.

New subject - a year or two ago, I began subscribing to the magazine Parenting. I thought that since I want to spend my life teaching parenting, it would be good to know what some of the contemporary parenting gurus have to say. For the most part, I enjoy the subscription, even if only for the adorable children that appear on the cover of each issue. However, I am beginning to realize that each issue is starting to sound exactly like the one before it... Every issue has an article with a number in it - "5 Mom Myths," "10 Things You Should Never Say To Your 3-Year Old," and so forth. Also, although I have no grounds for saying this, I am pretty certain that when the time comes for me to raise my own youngsters, I will not read the article that tackles everything "from new foods to tummy sleeping." I will go straight to my mother. After all, the three of us kids turned out pretty well - she must have done something right. :)

Tomorrow, I work half a day and then head with my mom to Laurajo's wedding. After partying into the wee hours, I'll spend the night at my aunt's house in Ohio, then drive to Lake Cumberland to celebrate New Year's with the family. Dad and I will return Monday night in order to work on Tuesday, after which I will be free to plan Game Night! If you live in the Kentuckiana area, consider yourself invited to the McKain house for Game Night on Thursday, January 5th. Not sure about a time yet... but there will be scads of food and scads of games. Can't wait.

If I don't talk to you anytime soon, may your New Year be the most wonderful celebration yet!

This is my conversation with the little (as in bigger) brother this evening, regarding a real concern of mine:

Ellehcim220: So, is it bad to subscribe to a google and ninety nine people's Xanga sites?
benjer05: nope
benjer05: not at all
benjer05: makes you look popular actually
Ellehcim220: Haha
Ellehcim220: Okay, then I'm doing it
benjer05: but i always balance that with how much i really want to read their updates
Ellehcim220: As long as it is in line with Xanga etiquette
benjer05: and of course...
benjer05: you have to know the people personally
Ellehcim220: These are all people I really want to hear from
Ellehcim220: Yes, yes
benjer05: or else they have to be friends of friends
Ellehcim220: They're all personal friends
benjer05: don't freak out any total strangers by subscribing
Ellehcim220: Laughing
Ellehcim220: I promise
benjer05: good deal

I always get the best advice from him. There's nothing like family to get you on the right track. And, according to my word, I have now subscribed to what seems like a hoard of friends' sites. Strange, that in our world one of the ways we stay in touch is by relying on daily Xanga Subscription Update e-mails to let us know what our friends are feeling and experiencing. It hasn't always been this way... did people simply work harder at communicating back in the day, or were they just go unaware of the day to day accounts of one another's lives? These are probably not questions worth pondering at length. :)

This was a day of setting up Christmas decorations. I was extra motivated this year since my Mom told me anything she decided not to use, I could have for Kenyon House. We have to spice that place up a little for the holidays, and the thin, silver, star-studded, leftover garland will be just the thing. I put mistletoe in two spots, not just the usual one this year. We'll see if we can trip anyone up. Silly me... that trick only works in While You Were Sleeping and Eastern Kentucky.

Saw Pride and Prejudice last night. If you value your time and intelligence, avoid the movie. The story had to blend so many incidents together that the progression was completely confusing, while some of the most "diverting" lines were lost either to poor sound quality or poor execution. Beyond that, precious moments that could have been devoted to fleshing out the storyline were instead filled with long sequences of Keira Knightley walking across a bridge or staring into her mirror, or worse, random deer loping across a field. It was all unnatural, and gave me a strong desire to sit down with the 5-hour BBC version as a sort of ablution. I have heard less scathing reviews of the movie; my criticisms probably should not be truested. But I would nevertheless encourage all to invest their $8.00 elsewhere, either in the very excellent Walk The Line or a Pepsi at a baseball game or something.

Okay, I'm off to read some C.S. Lewis, because I really should. Wishing you all a beautiful night... pray for chapel on Monday, if you think about it. Cheers
